Family Friendly Organization Tips

During the winter months we tend to spend more time indoors enjoying cozy nights on the couch and family game nights. There's a whole lot of fun to be had with hot chocolate and a heated game of monopoly between siblings.

The family or living room, in general, can get unruly with video games, blankets, and dog toys which can take the comfort right out of our comfort zone!

So how do we keep the clutter in check when there is more being done at home?

One of the biggest things you can do to maintain an organized home is to include everyone in the process, all while keeping it as simple as possible.

Tip #1:

Let the children help by letting them pick which area of the home they will be responsible for keeping tidy. Once they’ve decided, show them how it should look but also explain to them why it’s organized the way it is.

For example, is it just to make it look good or is it set up to be easily accessible? Once they know how and why the rest is up to them.

Tip #2:

Designate a basket or bin for each person for miscellaneous items. Everything you own should have a home but it can be hard to keep track of the little things like wallets, chargers, and headphones.

Having a basket for these items will ensure you never lose them while keeping the clutter to a minimum.

Tip #3:

Use labels! Whether it’s a bookshelf, entryway cubby, or a bin in the bathroom, labels will always help remind people where to put and find their belongings.

Last, but definitely not least, go through your paperwork and mail daily. School crafts, flyers, and bills can turn into extra clutter quite quickly. Ask yourself, “Do we really need to keep this?”

If it’s something your kids made for you, put it on the fridge for display and if the fridge is getting full ask them to pick their favourite and the rest can be discarded.
