Getting Ready for Dorm Life

Whether you have kids that are going back to school or you’re sending them off to college, there is prep to be done. Having a plan for staying organized will have a huge impact on their success throughout the year.

Dorm rooms can be small, so you may have to get creative with using space in the most efficient ways possible in order to fit in everything they will need.  Also, there may be some tough decisions when deciding what to bring and what will stay at home.

Before letting them choose what they want to take, first make a list of the non-negotiable items like school supplies, textbooks, clothes, and yes, these days, even electronics.

Try to determine how much hanging space they will need for shirts, dresses, and coats. Will they have room for a dresser or maybe some stand-alone shelves?

They will also need smart storage solutions for their toiletries, footwear, and outerwear.

Here are three simple items that can help keep their dorm room organized year round:

Shoe trees

How many shoes does one teenager need, right?!  Well, a shoe tree is the perfect solution because it keeps them off the floor yet still accessible for daily use. They also take up very little space.

Stackable baskets

Baskets are a great organizational tool on their own but when you can stack them…now that’s a game changer. Stacking baskets are perfect for toiletries, charging cords, extra supplies, and so much more.

Hooks

You remember what it was like picking their clothes up off the floor all the time. Also, hooks are easier and quicker to use than a towel bar and take up less space.
