Staying Organized on the Road
If someone was to ask you what the worst part of a road trip is, what would you say? Probably the unpacking and clean-up, right?
You may be finding that unpacking the car and cleaning the food and garbage from the back seat is the last thing you want to do when you finally return home. I get it, I mean, who would?
I’m here to tell you that there are ways to make this process easier, and even ways to stay more organized throughout the trip and it all starts with how you pack.
Pack in Categories
Shoving everything in one bag might help save space but as soon as you need something you’re just going to have to dig everything out and chances are it won’t be put back the way you had it.
Instead, pack your toiletries all in one bag or compartment (clear travel bags are best so you can see what you have) while keeping your clothing separate and take a garbage bag with you for dirty clothes. This makes laundry easier when you get home.
Shoes can also take up a lot of space so if you need to take multiple pairs, pack them all in the same bag.
If you’re camping and taking food, cooking and camping supplies, and hiking gear, you are going to want to pack those separately also. Consider putting all of your dry food storage together in a plastic bin, dishes and utensils in another and of course any perishables in a cooler.
Your camping gear is going to be needed first so ensure it’s packed into the vehicle last.
Set Some Ground Rules
Packing effectively will only get you so far if you’re not putting things back where they belong. Set some rules at the beginning of the trip to ensure everyone puts their items back after they are done using them.
Make sure there is a designated place for garbage, recycling, and dirty dishes. Then give each person a job for the trip such as disposing of garbage and washing dishes.
Travel Organizers
Keep everything within reach and easily accessible while driving with organizers made specifically for vehicles.
At Canadian Closet we have a wide range of organizers for your front seat, centre console, and even a media organizer that will hold your child’s tablet while they keep themselves occupied on the road
Remember, there is no right or wrong way to take a road trip but if you can plan accordingly, your trip will go a lot smoother and maybe you’ll be able to enjoy it just a little bit more.
